Ibiza airport to expand its ‘jet parking’ this summer
AENA plans to provide more than 50 parking spaces to prevent planes from being diverted to other airports due to a lack of space in the facilities.
A total of 80,000 square meters will be used to expand the parking area for private aircraft and aircraft known as “aerotaxis”. So far, the increase in this type of journey has led to diversions from the Ibiza terminal to other airports due to lack of space and increased demand.
With this initiative, Marta Torres (the director of Ibiza airport) explained to Diario de Ibiza that before the start of the 2019 season would be enabled this new area of “parking for jets. This will increase the operability of this service and promote Ibiza as a high standing destination.
Until now, many private aircrafts (including those of sanitary services or firefighters, for example) have had parking problems especially in the high season. The months of June and July have been the most ‘peaks’ of flights have had and, also, where more nuisance have originated.
Although this work has been planned since 2016, it has not been until now when it has begun to be executed due to the discovery of archaeological remains in the area projected for the new “parking”. After the pertinent authorizations of the administrations, it is foreseen that the construction will be finished before beginning the season.
Thus, in the summer of 2019, Ibiza airport will be able to accommodate more than twice as many private planes as at present (25 aircraft in a much smaller area than the current one). The demand of the last seasons will be able to cover, finally, helping to establish Ibiza as the luxury destination of reference in the Mediterranean.
